Full Moon in Cancer
A Lineage with Ancient Roots
Molly Hall, About.com

The Full Moon is exact on Wednesday, January 19th, 2011 at 4:21 pm est or 1:21 pm pacific.

•Jan 20th, 8:21 am Sydney, Aus
•Jan 19th, 9:21 pm London/GMT

This Full Moon is at home in her own sign Cancer. It's in the 29th degree, the anaretic degree, when the concerns of that sign are brought to resolution. This doubles the sense of culmination that comes at the Full Moon.

The waves of feeling are strong, at this water sign Full Moon. Thoughts of family, Mother and home are big. It's the longing for a nest, support system, cozy refuge -- the need to feel safe and protected.

Cancer is also the sign of the womb and primordial waters, out of which we emerge. And the emotional rivers and oceans we move through. As a water sign, the Moon Cancer reflects back what's fed into it. What's the state of your emotional ocean -- is it polluted with fear, negativity, stagnant pools of the past?

It's a great time for a Cleansing Full Moon Ritual or in any way symbolically freshening the waters. And to make sure your well is filled with emotionally rich images, music, and friends.

The Moon at its brightest is a reflection of the Sun in Capricorn, also at 29 degrees. It's the the cardinal earth sign so identified with tradition, the movers and shakers, and ancient lineages of wisdom. In perfect balance, the Sun and Moon alert us to what's possible, when power is balanced with a compassionate heart.

It can be a celebration of the matriarch, alongside the patriarch -- both have a lifetime of wisdom to share. Other possible balancing themes: Valuing the Earth as Source, not a resource; Honoring the Mother in the human and animal worlds (hens, cows, sows, as well as wild species); Balancing ambition with desire for family time; Restoring heart, empathy, sensitivity to the workplace.

A Daughter of the American Revolution

It's fascinating to me and other astrologers that the Sabian Symbol for 29-30 Cancer is A Daughter of The American Revolution ... The US is a Cancer (Sun) country, and I share its July 4th birthday, with an ancestral tie to a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Lyman Hall of Midway, Georgia.

This can be a time of celebrating family stories, and contributions your tribe has made to human endeavor and freedom. For this country, and the whole world, this is very much a time of getting back to the roots, the origins -- and rooting out what has value there. Taking only what has life, the seed, that can be carried forward into the future. Both Cancer-Capricorn concern ancestors, tribes, nations, alliances, and the legacies of past generations.

An intriguing personage to me now is Laura Magdalene Eisenhower, the great granddaughter of US President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Perhaps you know it's the 50th anniversary of Ike's famous speech warning Americans about the nascent power of the military-industrial complex.

To mark the anniversary, Laura Eisenhower, came forward with the message that Unity Consciousness will collapse the military industrial complex. This declaration comes in on the currents of Jupiter-Uranus Pisces, and awakening that all life is connected, and each is a face of the divine.

With her big luminous eyes, you can see the genetic inheritance from Ike, and yet she's a woman, and embodying the emerging feminine consciousness. Her site, Cosmic Gaia is filled with inspiration for those on this path of discovery. Her bio states, "She opens the gateways for ascension, reveals the source of ancient symbols, and brings to light the true Holy Grail."

Lineages and Legacies

Coming as Mercury aligns with Pluto, the message she's bringing forth has to do with state secrets, and secret alliances that have shaped some of our corporate and military institutions. Only by being willing to look at what's been happening these 50 years in the shadows, can we understand what's happening today. We know Pluto in Capricorn is transforming institutions, or drive them to extremes (fascism is associated with Pluto). Eisenhower knows she is carrying forward her ancestor's message, in a lineage going even further back.

Earlier this year, Eisenhower said, “My great grandfather, President Ike, who was also the Army general who led the Allied Forces to victory over Hitler, battled evil corrupt powers on Earth and took on some of the most challenging scenarios in history. As I grew up, I could sense that I was completing this battle that has ancient roots.” This Full Moon is the quest for the Holy Grail, the spiritual cup that runneth over.

In her article, Maidens of the Wells, Cathy Lynn Pagano shares a story about the keepers of the well. "This story asks each of us to go on the Grail quest and find the source of life again within ourselves, so we can be life-givers to our community."

The Spirit of Freedom

At the Full Moon, Jupiter is in its last degree of Pisces, for interstellar dreaming! Jupiter is days away from entering Aries, the cardinal sign of initiation. At this cusp, of Pisces and Aries, the soaring imagination meets the creative spark. And it's close enough still to Uranus to trigger rapid openings in every way.

Both the Sun Capricorn and Moon Cancer make trines to Jupiter-Uranus, to bring out the best of what's emerging from both. With the Sun, it's the will to persevere and take the right road, not just the easy one. The Moon Cancer evokes what we love dearly, and want to nurture and protect.

River Rushing Very Fast

Writing this, I've thought of how it feels to be knocked over by a wave, when you're at the ocean. If you try to resist being knocked over, you get out of synch with the wave, and can end up swallowing a lot of salt water. If you go with the wave, you can reach a smooth point faster, and even enjoy the thrill of being carried along.

This Full Moon can bring on emotional tides that wash over with a great force. If you're prone to extreme moods, or already feel overwhelmed, you might want to cozy up at home.

With planets of the collective involved, it can herald a time of being swept up in movements greater than yourself. It's a great time for creative experimentation, to find expression for these energies. You may find that working together with others, is a better way to go -- in collaboration, rather than isolation

Transiting Cancer Moon
The Mood of Cancer
Molly Hall, About.com

The Moon sets the emotional tone as it transits through the Zodiac signs. It changes signs every 2 1/2 days. You can work with this rhythm to "go with the flow" of the Moon. You can use it to know the general feeling tone to expect.

When the Moon is in Cancer, we all become homebodies. We want to retreat to the place we feel most at home. This can bring out a sense of "homesickness" if we're far from home, or estranged from others. It may be a time, then of reaching out to those that know us best.

This Moon makes us quick to tear up and have sentimental moments. We might get absorbed in memories of a long lost lover or friend. It heightens emotions, and we might experience mood swings, from dark lows to blissful highs. We are more sensitive to the moods of others.

This Moon makes us want to retreat, to refill the well. But it's about being enriched by close ties, and the safety of home, too. It's not necessarily mellow, but there's a sense of wanting to be enclosed, private, in familiar environs. We might reach for our favorite foods, or show love by baking or cooking. The trappings of home included aromas that are comforting. It all ends with cozying up in bed, maybe even being tucked in.

You may also get lost in an imaginative project. You can add emotional depth and nuance to what you're working on. Whatever you do, it's with more feeling.

It's a time of sensitivity, when we're more empathic in general. This can cause us to absorb the clouds of others, but it also leads to great compassion. This might extend out to include all of humanity. You might discover what soothing balm you can contribute. You have a greater instinct for what's nurturing for people and the culture at large.

Things to Do: Take a long bath, hydrate, irrigate, potter around the house; daydream; make your living space more homey; connect with your heart ties; mother someone or be mothered; nurture children, animals, the elderly (or any vulnerable thing); put protective gates around your garden; get a security alarm system or locks; talk to you Mom; spend time with women; bring treats to your co-workers; go to bed early; keep a dream journal close by; be near the ocean or waterbody; paint, draw, sing, act or write.
