Responsibility brings power

"To be tested is good. The challenged life may be the best therapist."

-- Gail Sheehy

What holds you back from being all that you are?

In your journal, list at least 5 things that hold you back.

Now review your answers. Have you blamed people or factors outside of yourself?

It's important to understand that ALL obstructions are rooted in our internal blocks. Even the problems that appear to be outside of us are only reflecting back to us problems we have inside. Once we address our inner issues, the outer problems disappear.

Be personally accountable for everything in your life and watch your perspectives shift. We claim our power when we accept responsibility for our lives.

"Conscious evolution begins as we take responsibility for clearing our own obstructions."

-- Dan Millman

I maybe on the wrong track with this one, but it seems connected with holding on to who you are in the face of challenges. What stops me from being all that I can be? I think that can be summed up in one word - fear. Fear that if I were to be the me that I know is genuine, then it would take me even further away from 'normality' and the basic provisions necessary in this life - food, shelter, an income, etc. There's a fine line between living authentically and living practically. And once you have a family of your own, you have children to consider and this breeds all kinds of new fears (no-one wants to do anything that impacts their children negatively do they?)

To a point you can remove your internal blocks and live authentically, but in Western society is it really possible to not blame some things on external factors? I mean, think about where our source of basic needs comes from - money. Industrialisation and commercialism have put a real spanner in the works and changed the spiritual nature of our existence. Here's a good example. I am an animal lover. Both my cats were rescue animals - one came directly from a storm water drain where it had been dumped as a kitten, and the other I adopted from a pet shelter. This is typical of my heart wanting to offer these animals a better life than they had. However, we now have a new council that has decided not only to enforce mandatory microchipping of cats (at $100 an animal) but is also bringing in cat registration at the end of the year which will also cost $100 a year per animal. Imagine the impact this is going to have on people who would normally adopt stray animals. There will be a lot more cats dumped as people cannot or will not pay these exorbitant fees and those who normally would consider giving animals a home will be put off by having the added expense which in some cases is out of their budgetary league. How is this a compassionate decision for the welfare of animals?

It makes me wonder why our society is structured in such a way that to be authentic appears to mean leaving yourself open for heartache and punishment. Being a responsible pet owner is no longer about providing food, shelter and care for an animal. It is about cold hard cash paid to hypocrisy of an institution - money that does not get channeled back into the animals themselves or their needs but goes straight into the coffers of the council as a profit. And I have to pay it just to enjoy the company of my animal friends which is who I am - an animal lover.

Sometimes this world really sucks.... kaos
