Speak for yourself

"An open ear is the only believable sign of an open heart."

-- David Augsburger

We can easily get into trouble in relationships when we assume that we know what someone else is thinking or feeling. Parents, in particular, can be quick to judge what’s going on in their children.

Rather than assuming we know someone else’s experience, we could shift our perceptions into questions. Instead of saying, ‘I know you’re hurting,’ we could ask, ‘Are you feeling hurt?’ This allows us to connect with the other with no risk of misunderstandings.

"It's always wise to raise questions about the most obvious and simple assumptions."

-- C. West Churchman

"To assume is to be deceived."

-- Yiddish proverb

:cheery: Assumptions are guesses and not facts or even reliable. Asking is a good way to gain insight rather than claiming to already 'know'. However, asking without any pre-conceived idea of what the answer might be is more valuable.

I really like the points you have raised with this post Solane :)

There are many assumptions that we make automatically based on our conditioning or beliefs, our environment or even our cultural heritage. To transcend all that and ask questions with an open mind and heart brings us closer to spirit and true understanding.
